How to Cool Down Your Energy Bill This Summer

If you’re like most people, you are always looking for ways to save on electricity. Here follow a few helpful hints to save on your electric bill.

You should install ceiling fans to keep the air circulating, and bump up the thermostat a few degrees. Your biggest energy hog during the summer is your air conditioner, and using ceiling fans can be a source of considerable savings.

Speaking of air conditioners, if you have not done so already, get a smart thermostat. That way, if everyone is out of the house during the day, you can switch the air conditioner off when you leave and then program the thermostat to start it up an hour or so before you are due to return, cooling down the house. You should also get your A/C system inspected at least once a year, and clean or replace your A/C filters at least once a month.

A leaky house loses cool air during the summer. Add some insulation to your attic, and make sure your windows and doors do not have any leaks.

You should make sure that the lights are turned off in rooms you are not using. Also, you should turn off appliances such as computers and televisions when they are not in use.

You should plant some trees positioned to provide maximum shade for your house. Direct sunlight can heat up the house, and having some greenery will keep your house cooler. Trees add beauty to your front and back yards, too.

Finally, you should consider not using the oven during the hot, summer months. A toaster oven uses less electricity and produces far less heat. Besides, summer is for backyard barbecues!
